John Shapcote of Stepney


Born approx. 1740, in Stepney, London, Son of John Shapcote and Rachel Sibbitt

1790 – Naval Agent of the Second Convict Fleet bound for Australia,

who died during the fateful voyage, along with many of the prisoners onboard.

His Probate papers were the first to be granted in the new colony Sydney, New South Wales.

Thomas Shapcote of Stepney, London


Born 1799, Stepney, London, Son of John Shapcote (2nd Convict Fleet) and Sarah Crofts

Thomas Shapcote married Mary Ann Leaver on the 28th January 1812 at the Parish Church of St Mary, Lambeth, London.

Naval Commander.

Edward Gifford Shapcote of Plymouth, Devon


Born 1827, Stoke Damerel, Plymouth, Devon, Son of Thomas Shapcote (above) and Harriet Leaver

Married Emily Mary G. Steward, in 1856, Pancras, London

1858 - Church of England Priest

From 1859 to 1861 Edward Gifford Shapcote served at the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene, West Lavington, Sussex.

From 1862 to 1864 he was a Chaplain at the House of Mercy, Hendon, London.

In 1864 he went to South Africa and worked as a Missionary in Philipposolis.

1868 he returned to England and was received into the Roman Catholic Church.

After a few years as a private tutor, became the Sub-Editor of the “Tablet” (a Catholic periodical).

Francis John Peake Shapcote of Plymouth, Devon


Born 1837, Stoke Damerel, Plymouth, Devon, Son of  Thomas Shapcote (above) and Harriet Leaver

Francis enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1845 at the age of 16. Served on the HMS St Jeanne d’Arc.

Served on HMS Leopard and HMS Nareus

1860 and was appointed to the Admiral’s Office in Devonport, Devon

Paymaster-in-Chief, Royal Navy

Auditor of the Union Savings Bank

Born  about 1804, Exeter, Devon, Son of John Shapcott and Sarah Youldon

married Eleanor Taylor Alford on the 24 December 1824 at the church of  Holy Trinity, Exeter, Devon.

Dyer, Calico and Furniture Glazer

Professor of Music

Founder of the "Musical Shapcott Family" a Saxhorn Band with toured Britain from the early 1850’s

Associated with the Temperance Movement.

The band became very popular and gave concerts all around Britain including at the Crystal Palace and Drury Lane.
